This investigation looked at how the big supermarkets have benefited from the recession - snapping up empty shops on the high street and renegotiating big development deals with cash-strapped councils. And as the big four fight for the best retail sites, we revealed how taxpayers are footing the bill for bitter store wars as supermarkets take councils to judicial review.

While the private companies that run Britain's bus network make record profits, passengers are facing savage cuts in services and hikes in fares. We discovered 90% of English local authorities were slashing subsidies at the same time as the private operators were revealing substantial price rises. Bus travel is becoming inaccessible to many of those who absolutely depend on it: the most vulnerable.
