New commission: Young British and Trad Wife

The BBC has announced a new commission from Firecrest Films and filmmaker  - Poppy Jay - Young, British and Trad Wife.

The single documentary follows Jay as she examines the growing online phenomena of Gen Z women promoting domesticity, homemaking and – for some – a return to patriarchal gender roles.

It follows the multi-award winning film Young, British and Anti-Abortion which Jay and Firecrest made in 2023. The documentary won the Sandford St Martin TV award, was nominated for a Grierson, and saw Poppy Jay win Best presenter at the Edinburgh TV Awards.

In this follow up, Jay immerses herself with a trad wife community to understand what is behind the trend, how it squares with modern feminism and where fundamental Christian ideals fit in.

“Meeting these women and stepping into their shoes challenged some of my assumptions but also raised much bigger questions about why these ideas are resonating with women now.”

The doc is exec produced by Vari Innes, produced by Claudia Massie, and filmed, directed and presented by Jay. The editor is Audrey McColligan.
